Minnesota motorcyclist struck by cement truck

On behalf of Bremseth Law Firm PC posted in Truck Accidents on Friday, September 9, 2016.

As discussed previously in this blog, there is no shortage of dangers faced by Minnesota residents while on the road. These dangers are heightened for motorcycle riders, who occupy a unique position on the road because of their visibility and size compared to other vehicles.

For instance, one Minnesota motorcyclist was recently injured after colliding with a cement truck. While the accident is still under investigation, initial reports were that the motorcyclist was traveling north when the cement truck pulled out in front of him. The motorcycle rider suffered serious injuries as a result of the crash.

The case is an important reminder of the dangers faced by motorcycle riders. According to some studies, two-thirds of motorcycle accidents involve cases where the driver of the other vehicle violated the motorcyclist's right of way and caused the collision. Given the smaller visual target presented by motorcycles, they are less visible on the road, particularly at intersections when trucks and other vehicles are entering the roadway.

This is no excuse for causing a serious accident, however, as other drivers still need to follow the standard of care required under the law. These rules obligate truck drivers and all other drivers to be alert for motorcyclists and to take appropriate precautions to avoid causing harm. Accordingly, injured motorcyclists can bring causes of action for negligence after truck accidents are caused by inattentive truck drivers.

In the personal injury lawsuit, a motorcyclist may be able to recover damages for his or her injuries. These damages are often more substantial in motorcycle accidents simply because of the disparity in size between the motorcycle and the other vehicle. Accordingly, it can be all the more important to seek compensation when these terrible accidents occur.
